OPERA CENTER ANNOUNCED FOR FULTON LOT
A March newspaper article was released announcing the plans to create an opera practice and office facility on the old Michigan Litho site on the corner of Fulton and Carlton. This lot has been vacant for five years since the Michigan Litho burned down in 2002. So news of this development is exciting. The building plans are for a two-story building that would be approximately 14,000 sq ft named “The Betty Van Andel Opera Center.” The developers sought and received a special use approval for practice/performance facility for a commercial district on June 12th. The site is being purchased from the Gilmore Collection and so far there have been no apparent soil or drainage issues at this development stage. This facility will serve both as a rehearsal hall as well as the company’s offices for about 100 individuals when the company is practicing. You will be able to watch rehearsals through large windows facing Fulton and see quite a bit of activity two months before show dates Monday through Friday 8am-5pm. Plans also include a small court yard and a second building to house a retail, restaurant and/or condos.

SPECTRUM HEALTH DAY CARE

Third Coast Development has started construction on the old Bishop’s Furniture site on Michigan. The main concern with their development was drainage. They are putting in closed pipe drainage to eliminate any open water. So far the project is coming along and we hear that there is already a waiting list of Spectrum’s employees to use their daycare services that opens in September.
